Budapest | City of Two
The cities of Buda and
Pest watched each other from opposite side of the Danube for centuries. Many
civilizations, from the Stone Age people to the Romans, to the Huns and to
today's Hungarians, have come and gone from these lands. The Souls of them
still stand in the city. Gül Baba still watches the city from a hill in Buda,
silently, St. Stephan (I. Stephan) stands in the middle of Pest in all its
glory, Dohany Street Synagogue continues to fascinate people with its beauty.
The Soul of Budapest
reminds us of reunions, to be united, to be one and to live together in peace. Will
we ever become one like Buda and Pest?
There is a saying in
Turkish that "you turn a person to a poet". That is exactly what Budapest
make us, a poet. During the day, you walk on the bridges cheerfully and sing
hopeful songs and in nights you are captivated by the lights of city and lost
in dreams.
Every street opens to a completely different
door.
Every step has a different feeling.
The city has a familiar
texture. You will surely find something to remind you of yourself.
Then, for a moment,
while you are walking along the Danube River, your eyes fill up because this
city, this old city, witnessed reunions and separations. The river flows but
the sadness of the river remains the same. Just like shoes on the edge.
The city gives you many
different emotions at the same time. You feel different during the day and
different at night. And it resolves all these complex emotions in the best way.
You meet at the feet of the Statue of Liberty (Szabadsag Szobor) with many
people from different parts of the world who speak different languages to
watch the sunset. The physical and mental fatigue of walking on the streets of
the city all day long, combined with the sweet tiredness of climbing Gellert
hill, and people become silent. Everyone watches the pink sunset together. Now
only one feeling remains, serenity.
Budapest, like a lover,
first makes you fall in love with itself. It seduces you with its night view.
Then he breaks your heart with shoes on the edge of the Danube. And finally, it
creates an unbreakable bond with the sunset.
I took a piece of
Budapest's Soul while watching the Danube with Gül Baba. And while I was
watching the pink sunset, I left a piece of my Soul on Gellert hill to the
city. If you go there, please do not forget to greet my Soul.
